Score Deluxe 33 pag. • Composition for Trumpet (cornet) (diff. VI) and Concert Band (diff. IV) • This Trumpet Concerto N° 2 in Eb (op. 198) was written in 1866 and was first performed by the Italian Banda Nazionale, conducted by the composer, on 15th April 1866 in the Piazza Garibaldi in Cremona. Ponchielli uses the sequence of movements characteristic of the time: the Introduzione is followed by an Aria and then by a Tema con Variazioni leading into the Finale. This composition has been adapted to a "modern" Symphonic Band, while maintaining an instrumental balance as close as possible to the original. The autograph served as reference and has been completed as appropriate by the editor. When we carefully observe the handwritten scores of Ponchielli it is clear that the family of wind instruments, at that time, were still being finalized, and that the mix engineer was rather low, even for the lack of some families of instruments, such as of saxophones, which had not yet been introduced, or that of tubas and clarinets that had not been classified, flutes and French horns were not provided in the Symphonic Band formation of the late nineteenth century. The result was then a sound effect very close to that of the Fanfare, for the great prevalence of brass instruments rather than reeds.
