Presentation
The Premiere of Atlantis took place the 5th of December 2007 in the Queen's Hall, Edinburgh with the George Heriots School Concert Band conducted by Gwen Kelso. Atlantis was inspired by the Hebrides Overture by Felix Mendelssohn (also known as the Fingals Cave Overture). You will find characteristic rhythms from this work in ATLANTIS. Mendelssohn visited Scotland and made a boat trip past the island of Staffa where the Gael, Fingal was reputed to have his cave, which is a long low fissure on the edge of the barren island. Mendelssohn later wrote his work based on his experiences.
I imagined this mythical city of Atlantis under the water far away from the shores of my country and the result is this exciting work for band - Bruce Fraser
