Carlo Pirolaholds the Chair of Band Instrumentation at the Conservatoire «G. Verdi» in Milan. He has worked as Assistant Bandmaster at the Teatro alla Scala.
He has taught band conducting and composition at the Municipal School of Music in Milan and now holds refresher courses for Bandmasters in various Italian cities, with amateur and professional band ensembles.
He has won several national and international competitions for original band compositions. The most recent include: 1st prize in the International Competition in Corciano-Perugia in 1997, 1st prize in the Basel International Competition CISM-DE-HASKE in 1998, 1st prize in the I. Capitanio Competition in Brescia in 1999, 1st prize in the Paris CMF International Competition for an original composition for a band and choir, and 1st prize in the IInd ANBIMA International Competition in Rome for a composition entitled «Banda Futura» soon to be published by De Haske.
Carlo Pirola’s curriculum and band music are mentioned in three dictionaries: «La musica italiana per banda e gruppi di fiati» vol. II by Marino Anesa, the «Neue Lexikon Blasmusikwesens» by W. Suppan - published by Schulz - Freiburg (Germany), and «The Heritage Encyclopedia of Band Music» by W.H. Rehrig - Integrity Press - Ohio (U.S.A.).
He has been a juror for several competitions held provincially, regionally, nationally and internationally.
He is a member of the Italian Section of the W.A.S.B.E.
He and Marco Bazzoli have been members of the Artistic Staff organising the «Flicorno d’oro» International Band Competition in Riva del Garda since 1999.
Carlo Pirola is part of the ISEB (European Band Institute) teaching staff, whose headquarters are based in Levico Terme - Trento - Italy, together with Jan Cober, Armando Franceschini, Felix Hauswirth, and Steven Mead.
